Self-Care Speech is Committed to Becoming Actively Anti-Racist

Like many white folks, 2020 woke me up from a passive & privileged slumber. We cannot and will not sit by~ I want to use platforms to continually listen, learn, and then advocate. This includes Self-Care Speech.

What does this mean for this community?

Speech-language pathology must become anti-racist. This field is 93% white, and this includes me. I grew up in a predominantly white community and attended predominantly white institutions. This is in no way my area of expertise. Therefore, I will share already existing resources created by BIPOC on this platform. Our Low-Stress Library will elevate diverse therapy materials, assessment procedures, and cultural humility resources from creators, mentors, and advocates who are BIPOC. I will also maintain a zero tolerance policy for any overt or covert racism in this community.

Please also note that I want this blog to be about so much more than me and my experience~ it’s open for you and your self-care and self-advocacy, too. If writing is also your outlet, and sharing your story with our community would help you heal, know that there is always space here. Get in touch at selfcarespeech@gmail.com.

I believe in channeling energy into action, and that you can take care of yourself by intentionally releasing negativity and effecting positive change. So let’s write. Donate. Vote. Sign petitions. Call your senators. Because Black Lives Matter. Not just a moment, but a movement, and a philosophy of both personal and clinical practice that will continually inform the community here at Self-Care Speech.

Sending you solidarity,

Erika
